"Butch is a Noun is a book that a) should be required reading in any gender studies curriculum; b) femmes should read whenever they're feeling unloved, lonely, or misunderstood; c) butches should read; d) all of the above. The answer, of course, is d. Thank you, dear Bear."—Kate Bornstein, author of Gender Outlaw

"Bear's poetry of butchness lets us see into facets of gender that usually aren't so transparent. And made me fall in love with butches all over again."?Carol Queen, author of Real Live Nude Girl

Butch is a Noun, the first book by activist, gender-jammer, and performer S. Bear Bergman, won wide acclaim when published by Suspect Thoughts in 2006: a funny, insightful, and purposely unsettling manifesto on what it means to be butch (and not). In thirty-four deeply personal essays, Bear makes butchness accessible to those who are new to the concept, and makes gender outlaws of all stripes feel as though they have come home. From girls' clothes to men's haircuts, from walking with girls to hanging with young men, Butch is a Noun chronicles the perplexities, dangers, and pleasures of living life outside the gender binary. This new edition includes a new introduction by the author.

S. Bear Bergman is also the author of The Nearest Exit May Be Behind You (Arsenal Pulp Press, 2009). Ze is also a frequent university and college lecturer on issues relating to gender and sexuality.

When I talk with elder butches about their lives, when I think about the trajectory of my own and the obstacles I have met along the way, I wonder whether there may in fact be a foie d’butch. A separate organ, born or grown, living somewhere in the body that takes in the damaging and difficult parts of butch life-- the otherness and the sorrow, the rejections and the violence, and the nourishing parts of it too, the warmth of the tribe and the balls-deep sense of honor and pride and then processes and balances and filters them until we are healthy enough to go on. It seems a lovely metaphor, and it just keeps going: of course, it would be in the foie d’butch that confidence and strength stored in the body from good and safe moments could be triggered to produce the extra energy needed in times of stress, just as the liver converts stored glycogen to glucose under the same anatomic circumstances. The disease of having to process too many harmful compounds loss, longing, fear, anger for too long would eventually cause the foie d’butch to falter unless it is given either help or rest. In the foie d’butch, as in the liver, the worst diseases are caused by obstructions, by hardening or stubbornness or paralyzation or blockage caused by acute overload, any of which causes the caustic chemicals of the liver, so helpful when contained and doing their jobs, to spill into the rest of the body and begin to consume it. Having to process too many harmful compounds loss, longing, fear, anger for too long would eventually cause the foie d’butch to falter unless it is given either help or rest. I have always thought of this, and spoken of it (as above), as the butch heart, continuing to romanticize that workhorse muscle as the writing of the modern era of the English language has taught me. Not at all surprisingly, some languages are way ahead of us. In Malay, the word for liver is hati, and it is viewed as the source of all emotion, even though it is understood as the metaphoric equivalent to the Western notion of "heart." Perhaps, as much as it lacks in lyricism to our Western ears, the answer is that it’s in the butch liver. Maybe the foie d’butch, the butch hati, heavy, hardworking, delicate, constantly adjusting, constantly soothing the blood and healing the wounds and making the cruelest betrayals somehow chemically possible to live with is what it is that I have been admiring in butches all these years.
