About the Author

Jessen Havill is a professor of computer science and the Benjamin Barney Chair of Mathematics at Denison University, where he has been on the faculty since 1998. Dr. Havill teaches courses across the computer science curriculum, as well as an interdisciplinary elective in computational biology. He was awarded the college's highest teaching honor, the Charles A. Brickman Teaching Excellence Award, in 2013.Dr. Havill is also an active researcher, with a primary interest in the development and analysis of online algorithms. In addition, he has collaborated with colleagues in biology and geosciences to develop computational tools to support research and teaching in those fields. Dr. Havill earned his bachelor's degree from Bucknell University and his Ph.D. in computer science from The College of William and Mary.

Very well written and understandable. Highly recommend the Bookshelf app - you can get access to the ebook on an iPhone, search for words or chapters, and have it read the book to you! Clearly the author knows comp sci :)

If you want a smooth ramp into a complex subject like Computer Science, this is it. This should be on every programmer's shelves.

I dislike how there is no way to check the solutions.

This book is incredibly easy to follow when compared to other computer science textbooks, and is written in a style that is both entertaining and engaging. The book is arranged according to a progression of computational concepts rather than as a manual of the Python language, and emphasizes development of problem-solving skills over memorization of methods and function. The book also boasts a massive number of exercises and projects of varying difficulty levels, to cumulatively apply the concepts that have been taught over the course of the book. All in all, one of the best computer science textbooks out on the market.

My introductory CS class used this book and it was a good choice for sure. The book explained things clearly and the programming assignments were well designed. Python is a good choice for a first language. Would recommend!

I took an intro computer science course this past fall that used this textbook. The textbook organized concepts in a logical sequence, and chapters were very readable. End of chapter exercises were varied and fun

The book was very well organized and the lessons and exercises built on one another very well. The projects inside the books were also extremely interesting and fun, and covered a wide range of disciplines. The concepts were presented very clearly throughout the book.

This book was extremely easy to follow, which made learning computer science a lot easier. The chapters all linked together really well, and the projects were challenging yet doable. Overall, one of the best text books I have used in a science class.

In this somewhat sleepy story by the creators of Your Move, the young narrator and his brother, Jim, help their father with his business, bus rides for "Leaf Peepers" to view the fall foliage. The boys roll their eyes at the Peepers' awe and playfully mock their inevitable remark: "Oh!... Look! Look, how beautiful!" Though the brothers discover several diverting sights, for the most part they remain quite bored with the tour (which includes stops at a pond, cemetery, river and pumpkin patch) and readers may feel the same. As tourist season ends and Bunting's (Gleam and Glow, reviewed above) story winds to a close, the youngsters sit outdoors one chilly evening, admiring the starlit sky. Admitting his embarrassment at letting down his guard, the narrator notes, "I guess our winter sky is always like this, but I just never noticed. I'm seeing it now the way the Peepers would see it." At their best, Ransome's acrylic paintings present lifelike portraits of the characters and glimpses of vibrant fall colors dotting the landscape. Yet the vivid colors do not completely compensate for the uneventful plot. Ages 6-9.

Gr 1-3-Jim and Andy are obliged to help their father run Fred's Fall Color Tours in New England in October. Andy narrates in the present tense as they ride their bus through the familiar environs with the "Leaf Peepers." They think that everything is beautiful and photo-worthy, and the brothers snicker and mimic their superlatives behind their backs. Ransome's acrylic paintings are brightly realistic, capturing the brilliance of a fine rural autumn day. The intent of the story seems to be that the boys learn to appreciate the natural beauty around them in spite of themselves; however, they become aware of this only on the last two pages and, since they are embarrassed by their feelings, readers are likely also to be uncomfortable and unconvinced.

Ages 5-8. Every fall Jim and Andy work with their father, who runs Fred's Fall Color Tours. They help him take care of the truck and guide the tourists around their picturesque village. The boys don't understand why anyone would want to take a tour of fall leaves, and they make fun of the tourists, especially their love of nature. This year, though, the boys slowly start to see some of the beauty they've always taken for granted, and by the end of the book, they're almost as sappy as the tourists themselves. The acrylic illustrations are lush and colorful, evoking fall so well you can almost smell the bonfires. A good introduction to both New England and the joys of nature. Marta Segal

About the Author
George Ritzer is Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, where he has been a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher and won a Teaching Excellence award by the American Sociological Association, and in 2004, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by LaTrobe University, Melborune, Australia. He has served as Chair of the American Sociological Association's Sections on Theoretical Sociology and organizations and Occupations. He held the UNESCO Chair in Social Theory at the Russian Academy of Sciences, a Fulbright-Hay Chair at York University in Canada, and a Fulbright-Hays award to the Netherlands. He has been Scholar-in-Residence at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study and the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences. Dr. Ritzer's main theoretical interests lie in metatheory as well as applied social theory. In metatheory, his contributions include Metatheorizing in Sociology(Lexington Books, 1991), Sociology: A Multiple Paradigm Science (Allyn and Bacon, 1975, 1980), and Toward an Integrated Sociological Paradigm (Allyn and Bacon). Professor Ritzer is perhaps best known for the McDonaldization of Society (4/e, 2004); translated into more than a dozen languages) and several related books (also with a number of translations, including Expressing America: A Critique of the Global Credit Card Society (1995), Enchanting a Disenchanted World: Revolutionizing the Means of Consumption (2/e, 2005),The Globalization of Nothing (2/e, 2007), and (with Craig Lair) Outsourcing: Globalization and Beyond. He edited the Encyclopedia of Social Theory (2005), and is the founding editor of the Journal of Consumer Culture. He just completed editing the eleven-volume Encyclopedia of Sociology (2007) and The Blackwell Companion to Globalization (2007). In 2006, McGraw-Hill published the second edition of Professor Ritzer's Contemporary Sociological Theory and Its Classic Roots: The Basics. In 2007, McGraw-Hill will publish the seventh edition of Modern Sociological Theory, and the fifth edition of Classical Sociological Theory. Lofgren, a professor of European enthology in Sweden, has written several books (i.e., Culture Builders: A Historical Anthropology of Middle-Class Life). Here he uses concepts and ideas from various social science disciplines, as well as frequent literary examples, to explore the history of tourism in the United States and Europe. He notes the inherent tensions in tourism: the desire to see everything v. the desire to get away from it all, the local v. the global, and the quest for novelty despite the commodification of tourism. He uses examples like vacation cottages, bus tours, the idea of "the beach," and souvenirs to make his arguments. The most interesting parts, however, are those that touch upon issues such as gender, morality, and class. Although the text occasionally wanders, overall it is interesting and well researched.
